Traumatic Brain Injury Representation in NYC

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is the foremost cause of death and disability among kids, young adults and the elderly in the United States today. Every year, an estimated 1.5 million Americans undergo a Traumatic Brain Injury. That’s 8 times more the number of people diagnosed with breast cancer and 34 times the number of new HIV/AIDS cases reported each year. The statistics are overwhelming:

  • 50,000 people die each year.
  • Approximately 230,000 individuals are hospitalized annually and survive.
  • Over 80,000 people are subjected to long-term disability each year.

The collective result: an estimated 5.3 million people, which is about 2% of the United States population, are living with a permanent TBI-related disability. The risk escalates among our adolescents, young adults, and those over the age of 75 years.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs when a blow, bump, jolt or any type of head injury causes damage to the brain. The injuries can lead to permanent brain damage or worse death, depending on the severity.
Nearly half of all TBI related injuries are a result of motor vehicle accidents. Even our military personnel are also at high risk. According to studies conducted by the Mayo Foundation and the CDC other common causes of traumatic brain injury include:
Falls. Any type of fall are among the most common causes of traumatic brain injury especially in older adults and young children.
Sports injuries. TBI may result from a number of sports related injuries, including boxing, football, hockey, or any type of high-impact or extreme sports.
Explosive blasts and other combat injuries. Explosive blasts are a common cause of traumatic brain injury for our active-duty military personnel. Many researchers believe that the pressure wave passing through the brain significantly disrupts brain function. Traumatic brain injury also results from penetrating wounds and severe blows to the head by shrapnel or debris, and falls or bodily collisions with objects following a blast.
Violence. Approximately 10% of traumatic brain injuries are caused by violence; including gunshot wounds, domestic violence and even child abuse.

Traumatic brain injury can have wide-ranging physical and psychological effects. Many symptoms of TBI will not appear for many days, sometimes weeks after the injury occurred.
Some of the symptoms include changes that affect your thinking, sensation, emotions, even your speech and language. TBI is also now related to post-traumatic stress disorder. Usually people suffering severe injuries require rehabilitation.
Individuals with symptoms of TBI whether mild to severe, should seek medical attention immediately. There is no known process that can undo any brain damage caused by any type of trauma; medical personnel will endeavor to stabilize an individual with TBI so as to prevent further injuries escalating.
Brain injuries impact the lives of everyone involved. Extensive medical care is often times required to aid with the recovery process. The process alone is almost always emotionally and financially demanding on the victim and family members as the assortment of medications and rehabilitation becomes necessary.
